  Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Bartholin's gland cyst?
What is a Bartholin's gland cyst?
Bartholin's glands cyst on either side of the opening to the vagina. They make (or "secrete") a fluid that lubricates the vagina during sexual intercourse.

A Bartholin's gland cyst develops when the ducts (tiny tube-like structures) that connect the gland to the vaginal area become blocked, and fluid "backs up" in the gland. A Bartholin's gland cyst feels like a lump to the touch. It is usually 1 to 3 centimeters in size (as small as a pea or as large as an almond), but can grow as large as a golf ball or rarely, even an orange.

A Bartholin's gland cyst can become infected and then becomes red, swollen and painful to the touch.

What symptoms are caused by Bartholin's gland cysts?
What symptoms are caused by Bartholin's gland cysts?
The symptoms caused by Bartholin's gland cysts vary depending on whether or not they are infected.

Non-infected Bartholin's gland cysts are most commonly painless lumps near the entrance to the vagina. They can range in size from a quarter of an inch to 3 inches (a small marble to a golf ball size). Bartholin's gland cysts may also cause a redness or swelling near the vaginal entrance.

What should make me suspect an infection?
What should make me suspect an infection?
Infections may be suspected if any of the following are present: fever; increasing pain; pain that limits activities (walking, sitting, physical activity, or sex); swelling in the genital area; or drainage from the cyst.

An infected cyst may grow very rapidly in size - during a 3 to 4 day period.

One study suggests that infection occurs in approximately one out of every three women with Bartholin's gland cysts.

  Will the cyst come back?
Will the cyst come back?
Bartholin's gland cysts do not usually come back after successful treatment. They occasionally come back years later and usually resolve with repeated treatment.

Bartholin's gland cysts recur after a surgical procedure less than 20% of the time.
